Great Composers and the Spirituality of Music
Beatrice Institute, one of our sponsoring institutions, recently hosted Maestro Manfred Honeck for a discussion on “Great Composers and the Spirituality of Music.”
In his talk, Honeck, Music Director of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, explores the richness of the creative process in the work of composers, musicians, and conductors. The Maestro is joined by John Henry Crosby, Founder and President of the Hildebrand Project, who moderates the discussion.
Some of the ideas addressed are: Is the work of the composer and musician a distinctively human act? What role does imagination play in a composer’s creation of new works? How does each performing musician, and the conductor in particular, interpret music scores? Does their knowledge of the composer’s life and intentions shape their interpretation of the music they bring to life?
