Exploring stories of how we became modern.
The Project
The Genealogies of Modernity Project recognizes that the stories we tell ourselves about the passage to “modernity” are many and often conflicting. Attention to the complexity of the intertwined genealogies of modernity opens the possibility to forge new relations to the past and discover resources for life-giving responses in the present.
The Journal
Our online journal offers a place for graduate students, early career academics, and established scholars to parse narratives of modernity and to make legible the intellectual and cultural "kinships" that often unconsciously subtend these stories. This exploration is conducted through a variety of genres and voices, taking the form of accounts of genealogy, critical reviews, and more.
The Podcast
The Genealogies of Modernity podcast is a limited series that takes up a well-worn story about what it means to be modern and how we got here, and then challenges that narrative with recent humanities scholarship. Genealogies of Modernity illuminates lesser-known pathways to the present and unearths overlooked resources from the past for flourishing in the future.
